Los Altos Hills City Council Candidates
No Yard Signs To Be Used During Campaign
Alternatively a limited number of small banners to be used
LOS ALTOS HILLS, CA USA - Three of the six candidates for Los Altos Hills City Council agree that they will not use yard signs
in their campaign and challenge the other candidates to do the same.
Because two of the three have never run in prior elections and suffer from lack of name recognition - the three will limit
themselves to a handfull of banners that will only be placed on private property (out of respect for free speech)
and in accordance with Town of Los Altos Hills ordinances.
The three candidates - Rich Larsen, Jean Mordo, and Ginger Summit agree that they want to run a positive campaign on the issues.
"Name recognition is important," states Jean (John) Mordo, "however, in the past, yard signs have been a negative issue in the campaign and caused much consternation amongst the residents and the candidates fighting over “stolen signs.” Since both Ginger Summit and Rich Larsen are first time candidates, we feel a modest alternative would be to have small banners placed on a few of our supporter’s private property.”
The cost of putting up yard signs is prohibitively expensive – running up to $1000 for 200 signs. “While the electorate would like to reduce campaign spending, this is one way in which we actually reduce the costs,” states Jean Mordo.
In the previous 2004 election cycle – Jean Mordo successfully initiated the effort not to use yard signs. All 5 candidates agreed.
In the past, Los Altos Hills’ candidates spent upwards of $15,000 - $50,000 for a contested seat on the city council. Los Altos Hills is a community of approximately 8,000 residents with a voting turnout of about 5,500 for a presidential election.
All three candidates are interested in ensuring civic beauty, but at the same time feel it is only fair that the two first time candidates that have little name recognition use the banners in a few locations.
The city council election will be on November 4, 2008.
